Bee Fox is a fifteen-year-old whose Mom, Bernadette, takes off to an unknown destination. She is an oddball architect who marches to the beat of her drum; her daughter is a bright and diligent girl who solves the puzzle via emails and many other methods. It's actually hard to go into details since the plot is fairly straightforward in its quirky way, but make sure to set aside some time if you're picking this one up.
The tale centers on Julia who at ten years old is coping not just with typical concerns like her parents' failing marriage and her first love, but also the end of the world. The planet's rotation is continually slowing, throwing the normal balance of the world completely out of whack. Walker's incredible explanation of this intricate world through her attention to detail is truly a pleasure and you will surely find yourself wrapped up in this original story.
Not only does the second Hunger Games movie come out mid-month, but one of my favorite books premieres at the beginning of the month: Ender's Game. If you haven't read this book, you really really should. Re-reading this recently as an adult definitely lived up to the strong emotional memory I had of reading it the first time around. A major plot twist, a brilliant young boy, and all in a world on the brink of intergalactic war? Make sure to grab a copy and then get your tickets!
Since The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer seems to be one of the most
hyped books of the summer, I was cautiously (read: really) looking forward to
diving into it. I thought the writing was really strong and while I've since
heard mixed reactions to the characters’ appeal, the book was well plotted. The
story follows a group of friends from an artistic summer camp through
adulthood. Par for the course, their relationships change over time but what I
actually found the most interesting was how their original characteristics
evolved as the years wore on. Insecurities grow, greatness is achieved,
depression and entitlement rear their heads, and so much more. The outsider
will always feel this way, the fragile and feminine will only grow more so, the
true genius flourishes and no amount of time or scenery takes them as far from
those summers as they think they have come. At times there is awkwardness, at
others there is jealousy; but overall there is a certain sense of confusion,
insecurity, and manipulation that plagues the central characters well past
their teenage years.

Oh, Mary Kay Andrews with your brightly colored, summer,
southern covers and stories. When you pick up one of her books, you definitely
know what to expect and it’s often like drinking a tall glass of sweet
tea—refreshing, a little sweet, and perfect for gabbing with your girlfriends.

In Ladies’ Night, a lifestyle blogger named Grace’s
personal and professional worlds turn upside down when she finds her husband
cheating with her assistant. A court-ordered spin through group therapy
provides her a group of friends who have been through their own trials. In
typical romance form, she also ends up meeting a heart-of-gold guy there who
runs a family business, has a son, and proves to be the partner she needs in
her new life. Getting revenge, uncovering corruption, adopting a pet,
rehabilitating a house, and starting a new relationship are just some of the
hijinx that ensue as Grace realigns her life in this fun read.

The Suitors by Cecile David-Weil sounded like a throwback to the Austen era, but unfortunately ended up being a bit of a stale read. I wasn't looking for
something that would set the world on fire, but the basic setup of the book
sounded like a decent bet. A luxurious family home that had to be put up for
sale, a glamorous group of house guests, sisters pursuing well-off husbands to
secure the estate—not unique tropes, but ones that usually lead to an enjoyable
and potentially elitist read.

Sadly it all just fell flat for me and it took some effort
to make it through. Neither of the sisters had truly redeeming qualities to
help round them out and provide balance to the superficial world. Frankly, they
just weren't that appealing. The book felt more like a downer than a bubbling glass
of champagne. While failed relationships and money troubles are often part of
the background, there was just nothing driving the story forward in any way and
I found myself more annoyed by everyone in the book than interested in their
endings. I wouldn't recommend this book, but if you have read it and did enjoy
it, definitely let me know in the comments section—would love to hear a
positive take on this as well!

Books about books; one of my favorite categories of
fiction. I don’t know what it is, but I
cannot resist a story about books or bookstores, particularly when there is a
secret hidden in the shelves or between the covers. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour
Bookstore is a fun, modern romp through a mysterious bookstore as seen through
the eyes of a young man who, while a little directionless in general, finds his
place in the unusual realm of the unique store. With everything from tech
solutions to obstacles that arise (via Google no less) to a secret society and
a special set of books that only certain unusual characters can access, this is
a fun story set in a colorful world grounded in books. Highly recommended for
anyone who can’t spend enough time lost in books or bookstores.

The Aviator’s Wife by Melanie Benjamin is a fascinating fictional look into the
lives of the golden family, the Lindberghs, and is a solid piece of historical
fiction. I vaguely remember hearing bits about Charles Lindbergh in high school
US History classes: flying across the channel, helping bring about commercial
air travel, his involvement in America First, etc. His accomplishments anchor
this story too, but it is told through his wife’s eyes and focuses on her
personal and their family life as well.

They married young but the way Benjamin tells the story, it was
Anne's resilience and dependability that strengthened the match initially, more so
than romance. She became his navigator
in the air and on the ground, learning how to be his copilot (the only one he
ever had) and navigate by the stars, charting courses for their Asian
exploration and more, while also coordinating their family, house, and more. Through
impossibly tough situations like the kidnapping and murder of their first
child, being pursued by paparazzi, and Charles’s relationship with Nazi
Germany, the author takes you deep into Anne's perspective, involving you in the
highs and lows of their high-profile life together.

A fascinating story grounded in American history, it is an
enlightening journey through a strong woman’s life, and while not a biography,
I ended the book with a sense of who she was, what her family was like, and
also the course of the country through these pivotal decades.

The Dinner by Herman Koch had been pretty steady on the
best-seller’s list, so it made the cut of books for our summer adventure. I
honestly wasn't entirely sure what to expect since the subject matter was hard
to get a read on. The basic premise is that the story unfolds over the course
of a dinner between two couples and that their children are somehow involved in
something illegal. It turns out this is a very complex situation involving modern race
relations, anchored by two well-off brothers, one of whom is a politician.

The twists and turns of navigating the modern world of
over-exposure courtesy of technology and the issue of protecting children in
cases of wrong-doing lie at the heart of this tale. It frankly could have been ripped from the
headlines: politics, money, race, blackmail, marital secrets and family drama
all anchor this story in a realistic way. While the reader comes to know the
full truth (or is given enough detail to feel like you've gotten the full
story), the morality questions are not as clear even once the timeline has been
pieced together. I appreciated this book as much for the issues it raised as
the story it told, so if you are in the mood for something that will linger
after you've finished, go ahead and crack the cover on The Dinner.

As a fellow Cornell grad and a lover of The Devil Wears
Prada, I was cautiously excited when I heard there would be a sequel: Revenge Wears Prada.
Undoubtedly a good business move given the first book and corresponding movie’s
popularity, I think this may have been a questionable writing decision. A quick
read and fine for something lighter, the continued story of Andy Sachs and the
infamous Miranda felt too forced and like it was occurring in a parallel
universe.

Andy is now best friends with Emily, which in movie-form I
would absolutely love since Emily Blunt was terrific as the sharp Brit, but in
book form, felt convenient and as if the author had perhaps taken the cue from
the movie itself. Andy and Emily are
also running a very high-end wedding magazine—Andy is the writing mastermind
and Emily basically handles everything else. A legitimate division of roles,
but I think I preferred imagining Andy’s return to normalcy after leaving the
fashion world in the first book to the idea of her jetting around to cover celebrity
weddings. Andy is all set to marry a publishing heir and
clearly now runs in society-circles, whether or not she feels fully comfortable
in that world. In-law troubles, a pregnancy and a buyout offer from none other
than Miranda’s publishing house turn Andy’s world upside down and she is left to
figure out the best path forward for herself.

writing is light, the plot is fairly obvious, and the characters lacked some of
the honesty I found in the first book, but if you want to try re-entering the
world of Andy, Emily and Miranda, it’s worth checking out. Weisberger is always
good for a light-hearted, fluffy read and while this is not my favorite of
hers, if you align your expectations appropriately, you might enjoy the dip

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the
mystery entitled The Cuckoo’s Calling that was released in April under the
pseudonym Robert Galbraith was actually penned by none other than J.K. Rowling.
We were traveling in South America at the time, and honestly, it was truly
headline-making news around the globe! It was definitely an interesting
experiment and a good case study for the power of an author’s name and publishing
house backing for a release. Of course once the truth came out, it immediately
rocketed up the best sellers list but it’s a strong book that deserved praise
in its own right as well.

The story centers around a private detective, Cormoran
Strike, who takes on the investigation of a model’s death. With a strong cast
of characters and a nice balance of the case with his personal story, this is
an enjoyable read. I wouldn't say it’s an edge of your set, pulpy mystery by
any means, but it is well-crafted and the writing is decent. From fashion
designers to adopted families, this story follows Strike all around London as
he tries to sort through the deceit, both professionally and personally. His gang includes a plucky assistant, an
over-involved sister, an easy-to-hate ex and many more characters that bring dimension
to his world. Definitely give it a go if you need a break from more typical
action or chick lit beach reads; it’s the first in a quality (if not completely
addictive) series.

I promise my love of reading has not diminished; the past few months have just been busy as I settled in at a new job and books unfortunately took a back seat. Skimming through this week's Times, I was really excited to see that Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter finally arriving in bookstores. I first heard about this book a few months ago and am excited it is here in time for summer travel. From Italy in the 1960s to Hollywood in present day, this story stems from the meeting of an American starlet and an inn keeper, and his reappearance several decades later. Apparently the storytelling and cast of characters keeps this out of "fluff" territory while still digging into the ups and downs of Hollywood. Coupled with a rave review from The Times, I cannot wait to get my hands on this novel and settle in for a great read.
It was refreshing to come across a well-reviewed teen novel that focused on reality, no matter how sad. Prepare yourself to become quickly emotionally involved in this story; you may want tissues ready. It's the story of Hazel, a teen diagnosed with cancer and the relationship she builds with charming Augustus Waters. At times laughing out loud and at others silently crying, I flew through this roller coaster of a read and recommend it to anyone who is up for it.

I resisted reading this book for a while since the material sounded just too random to interest me. The story of a family in the Florida swamplands who own a floundering alligator tourist trap held virtually no appeal for me. The praise heaped on Karen Russell's book convinced me that it was worth picking up and giving it a whirl, and I'm glad I did. Thirteen-year-old Ava Bigtree is an unusual heroine but provides the backbone and heart of the bizarre tale. With a bright brother, a ghost-obsessed sister and a mostly absent father, she takes on the revitalization of their family's theme park by herself. The book is definitely unlike anything I've read before but it is well constructed and an entertaining read.

This week in the Times, two books about this topic were spotlighted: Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage by Hugh Brewster and Shadow of the Titanic by Andrew Wilson. Based on the reviews, it sounds like both offer a deeper look into the world at the time of this disaster as well as profiling the lives of those aboard. For anyone looking to go deeper than Kate and Leo, you should check out these two titles.
The complications of medicine and brotherhood lie at the heart of this moving novel. With their mother's death and their father's disappearance, Marion and Shiva Stone grow up with their adopted family and continue the interest in medicine that runs in their blood as well as their home. They have an extremely close connection even as their differences pull them apart as they get older. Set in the turbulent environment of Ethiopia, this family saga will take you on an emotional ride through family history, secrets old and new, and love lost and found. Be prepared to invest time in this incredible book; once you pick it up it's close to impossible to put down.
There is nothing like being in a building that is completely dedicated to reading and contains more books than I could ever consume. The website Awful Library Books takes a look at the older books that are still part of collections across the country and pokes fun at the crazy titles, covers and material that somehow made it into print many years ago. It's kind of amazing that some of these are in rotation, but I guess if you don't have to edit things out, why would you get rid of a book? As with anything outdated like clothes, music, and hairstyles, these books allow us to look back at a different era and laugh about how much has changed. Prepare for a good laugh...
Isolated on a homestead in Alaska in the 1920s, Jake and Mabel live a solitary life in a bleak landscape. Not only is the physical aspect challenging, but their current lives as well as their past emotional baggage present a burden that is almost too much for their relationship to bear. While Jake is trying to find enough food for the winter and stabilize their lives, Mabel falls deeper into her depression. In a moment of togetherness, they build a snow child out of the first snow of the season. The next day the child is gone but they glimpse a blonde girl running through the woods. The story picks up quickly from here and Eowyn Ivey's writing transports the reader to the remote woods and the almost magical relationships that bloom around the girl, Faina. A truly beautiful story and one that stays with you once you reach the last page, it is a unique frozen fairy tale that I definitely recommend.
From the future of the United States to a revised history of 9/11, I was captivated by the real and fictional alike. The book I was most struck by though was No Time Like the Present by Nadine Gordimer. The story follows Steve and Jabulile who married when interracial unions were illegal under apartheid. Digging into their lives in the aftermath of this change, Gordimer draws from her in-depth knowledge of the region to construct a detailed picture of family and society and all the hopes and disappointments that come with such a large cultural shift.
Picking up at Pemberley after the Jane Austen tale Pride & Prejudice concludes, much seems the same yet much has developed in the intermittent six years. Elizabeth has grown into a woman who is both a mother to two boys and runs the house with skill. While the ball is quickly approaching, she is still orchestrating her sister's affairs as well as coordinating the event. All that changes the night before the ball when a carriage arrives at her door bearing her overwrought sister who shrieks hysterically about a murder. Told fluidly in the manner of Austen herself, the book races along in the mannered world of Pemberley as all involved try to resolve the mystery.
